Art of Shaping and Forming Metal

Art of Shaping and Forming Metal Creating and object from a piece of metal is truly an amazing process. When looking at sculptures and metal structures one may take for granted the time, effort, and ingenuity that were required to form and create the object being admired. In fact, forming and shaping metal is challenging. Many people have devoted lifetimes to careers that focus their lives on the bending and shaping of metal. The study of metal really is a science known as metallurgy. More specifically, the term metallurgy refers to the science responsible for studying the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements. Metallurgy is commonly used in the craft of metalworking. Metalworking, therefore, refers to the trade and practice of creating things, structures, etc. out of metal. Metalworking can be an art, hobby, industry or trade.

Knowledge of High Speed Steel

Knowledge of High Speed Steel High Speed Steel (HSS) is a kind of steel containing some other elements: carbon, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, and or cobalt. After heat treatments, it will have high hardness even at high temperatures. When the cutting temperature exceeds 600 C, the hardness of HSS will not decrease apparently. The cutting speed of cutting tools made of HSS can exceed 60 meters per minute, thus High Speed Steel gets its name. HSS can be classified as ordinary HSS and high performance HSS by its chemical composition, and can also be classified as melting HSS and powder metallurgy HSS by its manufacturing process. Ordinary HSS Ordinary HSS can meet general needs. Two commonly sighted types of it are tungsten series HSS and tungsten molybdenum series HSS. a. Tungsten series HSS Its typical grade is W18Cr4V.

Types Of Metal Used In Metal Railing

Types Of Metal Used In Metal Railing Traditionally, the use of metal in railings and other articles was limited as it required a lot of hard work and skill. With the introduction of technology, working with metal has become easier and made it the most favored material for all class of people. Iron railings ndash all time favorites Traditional and still modern ndash iron railings The 16th and the 17th century saw the beginning of the industrial revolution, which gave rise to the art of metallurgy. Cast iron and wrought iron railings became famous among the higher class in this era. In those days metallurgy was considered an art, which involved working with metal. The absence of welding technology made it more complicated, as joining metal was done in the traditional way of heating and hammering or by riveting.

Industrial Furnaces

Industrial Furnaces Among early civilizations, Indus Valley excavations reveal the use of big furnaces matching contemporary civilizations. From then on, by constant endeavors and innovations great strides in design developments have taken place in industrial furnaces. Specialization has peaked resulting in variety of furnaces. There is a furnace for every specific requirement today. Ore extraction required furnaces in huge volumes to separate the metal from the raw material. The branch of chemistry Metallurgy with the aid of physicists and mechanical engineers evolved metallurgical furnaces for smelting and other processes. Bessemer, reverberatory, rotary, induction etc. are jut few names in furnaces that find use in metallurgy. All metallurgical furnaces are designed for extreme heat and high temperature applications. Again, in metallurgy diversified requirements demanded different designs in furnaces. For example, the aluminum ndash melting furnace was different from the iron and steel furnace depending upon the temperature requirement of the end metal and the raw material ore, contaminated with different metals and impurities.

When Humans Discovered Metal

When Humans Discovered Metal Recent Archaeological findings reveal that humans have been using metals since the Neolithic period and mining and working of metals began in around 8,000 BCE, ten thousand years ago. This is much longer than previously presumed. In fact, simple copper artifacts dating back to 9,000 BCE were recently found in Asia Minor. It seems that the Hittites, of the Taurus mountain range area in what is now Turkey were not the first metal workers, as was formerly thought, but actually inherited their savvy in Metallurgy from the earlier cultures of that region who were the first metal users as far is known at this date. The first metals that were used by humans were gold and copper. This is understandable, as both are easy to see and both are easy to work using just simple tools.

New High Tech Shaving Razors Are Now On The Market

New High Tech Shaving Razors Are Now On The Market Ever since the trend in shaving facial hair developed in Europe during the early part of the 1800 s, frustrated men everywhere have been been struggling with their razors. The fact is, that a dull razor can turn shaving into a miserable experience. Double edged and triple edged disposable razors have been a big improvement but something even better has recently appeared on the market. New Metal Technologies in Razors New developments in metallurgy that in the past would have been confined strictly to strategic industries related to the military have been finding their way into more sensible uses now. One of them is in the development of shaving razors that remain sharp far longer than shaving razors ever have in the past. Also, these new high tech metals are now being used in classic straight razors as well, that more and more men are beginning to use.

Ninja Swords - Special Swords for Japanese

Ninja Swords Special Swords for Japanese What makes the ninja sword so desired to captivate the imagination. Perhaps it is the rugged and practical beauty of this ninja sword. Straight in it s lines, practical in it s appearance, the ninja sword is a beautiful weapon that when displayed, brings to a room a sense of mystery. Used on occasion by the ninja, the ninja sword was used for unique roles in a war. The ninja were the special ndash forces of the Japanese army or of a king. Trained for the utmost stealth, they were the assassins, the saboteurs the scouts. As such long unwieldy swords were of little use to the ninja. The ninja sword was designed for quick draws from the sheath to overcome an opponent with a longer sword. This crucial moment was enough to have the edge and give the ninja victory in close combat.

Discussion of Swords in Japanese History

Discussion of Swords in Japanese History The oldest swords on record in Japan were sent to a queen from China in roughly 250a.d. At this period a great number of the swords came from China made of Iron. Along about the 5th century is when steel swords were finally created. The technology to create steel from Iron involves carbon material during the smelting process. It is this additional material that creates an iron alloy or ndash steel. This alloy then allows the metal to be harder (addition of carbon), but not so hard that it becomes brittle, and will therefore still maintain its malleability from the Iron. The hardness is required to hold an edge during the sharpening process, while the iron softness allows the blade to withstand metal to metal contact during battle situations without shattering the blade as would happen with extremely rigid metal.

Many Terms To Know For A Weapon

Many Terms To Know For A Weapon Blade construction varied over the years based on the material and technology used. In the early years of metallurgy, blades were short. The length was limited by the material used until such time as smithing technologies improved to increase the tensile strength of the material. Bronze was first turned into blades due to the lower smelting temperature and produced a better blade. Iron was next, which although softer, had ore material that was more readily available and therefore used to outfit entire armies. Later the construction of the blade was altered yet further by introducing fullers. The fuller was a ridge that ran down the center of the blade. This left a groove like structure that eliminated metal material and therefore made the blade lighter, but was able to maintain its strength, much like a steel I ndash beam used in construction.
