Calculation of Phase Diagrams
This excellent book is probably the first comprehensive guide to the CALPHAD method. CALPHAD is an acronym that was coined in the early 1970s and stands for CALculation of PHAse Diagrams. The CALPHAD method is based on the fact that a phase diagram is a representation of the thermodynamic properties of a system. Thus, if the thermodynamic properties are known, it is possible to calculate the multi ndash component phase diagrams. In other words, thermodynamic descriptions of lower ndash order systems (e.g., the Gibbs energy of each phase) can be combined to extrapolate higher ndash order systems. In metallurgical engineering, for example, the CALPHAD method is invaluable when it comes to understanding the relationship between the chemical composition of an alloy (typically based on complex higher ndash order systems), the processing conditions, the resulting microstructure, and the alloy s final properties.

And a head first jump into the folk ndash lexicon of village Karnataka It was mid ndash September and the beginning of a very temperate South Indian Autumn a group of students and I were on a visit to a local archaeological site just outside of Bangalore city. We all packed into a mini ndash bus and rode out the sixty mile journey to the Ramanagara Taluk Valley, where we soon came upon the ancient environs of the Kunagal Hills. Our guide in this venture was the archaeologist, cultural anthropologist, and folk ndash lore scholar, Dr. M. Byregowda. Dr. Byregowda is a man of action who possesses a great love for pre ndash history, folk ndash knowledge, and old ndash time Indian tradition. He took his doctorate degree after doing an extensive field study on the Iruligas tribals.

New Molybdenum Mine Hopes
The high price of molybdenum may finally take the Ruby Creek molybdenum deposit the final steps on its way to becoming a mine. By then, it will have been about 40 years since it was first discovered, and another 30 years since it was nearly ready to become a mine. But, it may be more than the high price of molybdenum which could officially make Ruby Creek one of Canada s newest molybdenum mines. Perseverance by Larry Reaugh, executive chairman of the Adanac Molybdenum Corporation, who with a bit of luck and 44 years in the mining experience ndash not to mention of few mines he s brought home, all add up to what it takes, these days, in pushing a project through to completion. We talked to Larry Reaugh over three telephone interviews to find out how he got this far and what steps he needs to take to bring the Yukon s Ruby Creek to her final destination: a moly mine producing some 14 million pounds of molybdenum every year.

China is eager to address one of the primary culprits behind its alarming coal mining fatalities, as evidenced by the Pre ndash Mining Degasification Symposium held in South China s Guizhou province on March 31st and April 1st. Sponsored by the province s Coal Mines Administration Bureau and the Coal Mine Safety Inspection and Supervision Bureau, coal mining executives gathered in Guiyang, a modest ndash sized city (by China s standards) of more than three million people, to discuss how the latest foreign technologies could help degasify China s 2,000 coal mines, both improving mine safety and reducing China s global output of air pollution. More than 80 representatives from 40 coal mines attended in China s second largest coal ndash producing province to find out about the latest foreign technology transfers, which might help reduce coal mining deaths.

King Of Kings - It s Not What You Think It Means
We hear Jesus referred to as «King of kings bdquo but what does it mean? We have a great deal of ldquo Christianese» of this genre that we are prone to throwing around, arrogantly expecting that everyone who hears our pious, self ndash righteous, spiritual jargon will (A) understand us and (B) be impressed with how we wield that sword. For example, I recently gave a young man a book with the word «Christ» in the title. He couldn t even pronounce it, uncertain as to whether the CH were pronounced like a «K» (as in Kitten) or as the «CH bdquo in bdquo Children. bdquo In case you did not know, bdquo Christ bdquo comes from the Greek bdquo Christos ldquo which refers to the ldquo Anointed One. ldquo Every king and high priest was anointed on the head with holy oil in ancient times, a tradition that continues during coronations of monarchs of European and Arabian history to this day.
