A History of the Bicycle

A History of the Bicycle Today we all enjoy riding bikes and pedaling through the streets on our way to work or simply going for a ride through the park. The bicycle, however, is a versatile invention that has gone through a variety of forms before reaching its present state. The first thing that was created that looked even remotely like a bicycle was developed by the Baron von Drais as an aid to walking in the royal gardens faster. Two wheels of the same size were mounted in a frame which you straddled. This device did not have pedals and instead was propelled by pushing one s feet against the ground creating a kind of gliding walk. Eventually, the machine came known as the Draisienne or hobby horse. This invention enjoyed a short period of popularity as it was not practical for transportation in any place other than a well maintained pathway such as one in a park or garden.

How Tough Is It To Live In Romania These Days?

How Tough Is It To Live In Romania These Days Many people tend to think that life in Romania must be difficult at present. All the trials that the country went through during the decades of communist rule must have taken their toll, they would conclude. Also, trying to match steps with the rest of the developed world would surely result in a vicious struggle for survival. Actually, such thinking could not be further from reality. Because the reality is that life in Romania has become easier in the last few years. For the Romanians on the street, life is closely intertwined with work. They can be busy as bees pretty early in the morning. In general, the working day begins at seven in the morning and ends by three in the afternoon. Sword of Damascus Got to do with Modern Day

Sword of Damascus Got to do with Modern Day When the brave and experienced fighting Christian knights trekked the long route to the holy lands to fight the Muslims they were in for a terrible surprise. They were beaten and beaten hard and repeatedly and eventually sent packing back to England and Europe defeated. What they were not prepared for was the secret weapon of the enemy they came to easily slaughter in the name of God. The Muslim fighters had a superior weapon and that was Damascus steel. Their swords and daggers were made from this vastly superior steel. It is said, and probably a fanciful bit of exaggeration, that a Damascus sword could slice through a silk scarf falling through the air. True or not, the Damascus sword was amazingly sharp but also much stronger than normal steel.

Insights Into the Minneapolis Bridge Collapse

Insights Into the Minneapolis Bridge Collapse The incredible collapse of the Minneapolis bridge will send a message to the nation that has been repeatedly sent for decades, but that our political system has refused to effectively respond to. America s physical, engineered infrastructure has been in desperate need for massive spending to repair and replace, but the multi ndash trillion ndash dollar cost has been rejected by local, state and federal politicians. We have had bipartisan government neglect. The bridge fell down because our politicians have let us down. First, understand that I have a professional background in this area. My career started as a metallurgist, than I obtained a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering and became a full professor of metallurgical engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where I taught about mechanical metallurgy and failure analysis, and in my consulting practice regularly worked on explaining actual failures of products and systems.

Dry Film Lubricants - More Than Just Low Friction Coatings

Dry Film Lubricants More Than Just Low Friction Coatings Dry film lubricants are much more than low friction coatings. That s right. They can be used for metal wear protection, too. Especially when surface contact is severe and localized. Ironically, this is the time when lubrication, not hardness alone, is key. Does your surface condition fall within these types of wear or contributing factors? Wear Adhesion ndash ndash visible by fretting, pits, holes or scales transfer, the result of softer materials dislodging from a widened hardness gap between two moving surfaces. Besides a drop in performance, look for visible changes in surface finish, dimensional or geometric distortion. Wear Abrasion ndash ndash witnessed by scratches, grooves, or corrugations, caused by loose abrasive particles torn away from the wear surface. Also look for negative changes in performance, surface finish, dimensional or geometric distortion.

An Introduction To Gauges

An Introduction To Gauges A gauge, as indicated by its numerous definitions, can mean a lot of things to different users. In order to determine its precise meaning, you would first have to look at the context in which this word is being used. Generally, gauge is the term used to denote a typical form of measurement referring to an object s quantity, capacity or even its dimension. It may also refer to the instrument employed whenever an item is being measured or examined. Gauge may be the basis for making an evaluation or estimation like a test. In mathematics, gauge, as a concept, is applied when studying convex sets. In knitting, gauge would mean the fineness of the total stitches made within a certain length of the material. In physics, it is part of the group forming the mathematical mappings known as the gauge transformation.
